Under the USHINGI Programme, Makwara VBU continues to demonstrate strong commitment to community development, livelihoods improvement, and sustainable income generation with one of its key initiatives, the fish farming project, showing encouraging results since its implementation.
To date, Makwara VBU has successfully sold close to 387 kilograms of fish at a price of $3.50 per kilogram to local markets and supplied to Dumba Supermarket, expanding access to fresh protein while strengthening the VBU’s market linkages.
These sales have generated income for the group and reinforced the viability of aquaculture as a sustainable livelihood option.
Beyond fish farming, Makwara VBU is actively involved in community-based economic activities aimed at improving household incomes and food security. The VBU brings together community members, including youth and women, to work collectively, share skills, and support one another through various livelihood projects that includes horticulture, apiculture, cold chain as well as hatchery services.
Through these efforts, Makwara VBU promotes cooperation, self-reliance, and inclusive participation in local development.
The success of the fish farming project highlights the positive impact of the USHINGI Programme in building resilience, enhancing nutrition, and creating market-oriented production at community level
