Established under the Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund II (ZRBF II) in February 2026, the Manyemu Village Business Unit (VBU) has experienced both successes and challenges in its mission to improve livelihoods and strengthen food security for farmers in Ward 11 of Mbire District. In its early stages, the project faced several setbacks, including excessive rainfall, poor soil drainage, and other production-related constraints that affected crop performance and delayed progress.
However, today marked the beginning of a new era of meaningful success for the farmers, as a hive of activity unfolded at the Manyemu VBU. Farmers proudly sold their first produce, with some selling fresh vegetables while others sold onions, collectively earning a total of US$15. This milestone signified the first tangible returns from their collective efforts and renewed hope within the farming community.
The Manyemu VBU is currently managing a variety of crops at different stages of growth, including onions ready for market, cabbages nearing maturity, tomatoes almost ready for harvest, vegetables already prepared for sale, okra at podding stage, and green mealies still at vegetative stage. These promising crops are projected to collectively generate approximately US$600 by the end of June.
This milestone demonstrated the resilience, determination, and unity of the farmers, while also highlighting the strong potential of the VBU model to transform rural livelihoods and create sustainable income opportunities for the community.
For most of the farmers, this was more than just a successful market day, it was clear proof that their hard work is beginning to pay off. The income generated will go a long way in supporting their families and improving their overall livelihoods.
The first harvest at Manyemu VBU marks the beginning of a promising journey. Farmers continue to share their successes, encourage one another, and look forward to even greater harvests and increased income ahead.
