103 organic farmers in Nkayi graduated under Special Certificates of Agroecology Practice programme
A huge congratulations to farmers from Ward 29 in Nkayi for a remarkable achievement of becoming the first group in Matabeleland to graduate with a Special Certificate of Agroecology Practice, offered by Fambidzanai Permaculture Centre (FPC) in association with Bindura University of Science Education. This milestone is proof of their dedication and commitment to sustainable agriculture practices and Nomusa Sibanda’s tireless efforts as their trainer.
Nomusa, a Diploma in Agroecology student at Fambidzanai Permaculture Training Centre and ADRS Officer in Nkayi District’s Ward 29, has played a pivotal role in empowering the farmers with knowledge and skills in agroecology.
Her innovative approach to training involved applying the knowledge she gained during her studies at FPC to practical farm training, she would return with her newfound expertise, empowering the farmers with the skills and confidence to adopt to Agroecology practices.
The training programme has indeed empowered the farmers with the knowledge and skills that will aid to the improvement of their livelihoods and contribute to a more sustainable food system.
Her achievements have seen farmers managing to venture in product development initiatives that include the production of Jams, Drinks, feed and feed blocks. Together with her farners, she dedicated 5 nutritional gardens to specifically focus on organic farming practices. These initiatives provide farmers with more income, promoting food security and nutrition for the community as well as their livestock.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, FPC Director and Principal Mr Kudzanai Lewis Mashingaidze appreciated the work done by Nomusa Sibanda in pioneering this pilot program that the institution is ready to roll out because of the exceptional results realized in this programme.
“We have realized that this pilot program has produced brilliant results, meaning we can now begin to roll it out to other Districts.
“So we appreciate the efforts by Nomusa Sibanda in making sure this program becomes a success,” said Mr. Mashingaidze.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Nomusa Sibanda appreciated the training she received from FPC which has improved her knowledge on Agroecology based farming practices. Imparting the skills to the farmers has brought the good results witnessed on graduation day. She also applaudes the great support from her supervisor, District Agritex Officer Mrs Ncube, who is also passionate about adoption of sustainable agriculture and climate smart practices by farmers.
Also in attendance were the traditional leaders, local leaders, the Provincial and District AGRITEX Officers amongst others.
