Project Overview
The project targeted youth refugees in Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge, Zimbabwe. The overall objective of the project was to promote livelihood resilience amongst the youth through capacity building on gardening innovations that use little water and less laborious. Wicking beds, with their water saving capacity and low demand for regular maintenance, were identified as one of the key innovations to improve horticulture production by the youth in the camp. Since water is very scarce in the camp, gardening activities have halted for quite a long time but through the introduction of wicking beds, which use even recycled water for irrigation, more than 50 youths have reignited horticulture production in the camp.
